  • Has anyone got any experience of keeping an ant as a pet?

    I need some advice.

  • Our ant died recently. I still have a leash and some used chew toys if you want them. (Okay, they're not so much chew toys as just tiny pieces of rotting food. You're welcome to them all the same.)

  • I'm a vet's daughter.  Heck, my mother laughed at me when I brought my concussed guinea pig to the surgery (Dad threw a carrot out of the kitchen window on the second storey, yada yada yada..) so I don't think there's a whole lot she could do for an ant besides recommend Baygone.. sorry!

On the bright side, when it dies, there is no child alive who'll recognise the fact that you've replaced it with a substitute.  This ant will live forever!!!

  • i had a pet ant once. my brother and i kept him in this bug box he got with a bug book. the ant crawled out one of the little holes in the top. either that or our dad killed it...

either way, it's traumatizing to a 3 and 5 year old!

  • Advice?

They aren't fond of tanning by magnifying glass or boric acid baths. That pretty much sums up the data I collected in my experiments...er...encounters.

  • Oh William...I'm so sorry. I hope it wasn't too gruesome a demise.

And the ever ravishing Lady M, thank you too for your advice, but I'm going to have to pretend I didn't read it. I appreciate that my ant won't live for ever but I don't want to think of it shuffling off just yet, thanks all the same.

Penny...that's a heart warming story. Where can I find one of those little books, I wonder....

DiDi..tell me about these encounters of yours...

  • *LOL* ~ I'm starting to suspect that the excessive heat here in the UK may've affected you slightly.. I recommend some nice crunchy ice

  • Do not buy an aardvark as a buddy for your ant.

  • OK, right then, I won't.

  • The hell with the ant...how cool would it be to walk around town with an aardvark on a leash? Ah, actually...the ant might be best for you as I'm pretty sure I've never heard of ants aggravating childhood asthma.

I tell you about my encounters all the time...

  • Squish it and then use the experience as a lesson in nature's life cycles. All ants go to heaven, or something like that. Or say it's living happily on a farm now, where it can run free and live like ants are meant to live.

    Welcome back!

  • Don't let it run free in the house or you'll never find it, or maybe worse, it may bring in tons of its friends and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Cages generally don't work though. I tried that already. Damn runaway ants.

  • I dunno... I hear they like picnics.

  • no advice-- just a song you can sing to and entertain the ant with...

But he's got high hopes, he's got high hopes
He's got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

So any time your're gettin' low
    'stead of lettin' go
    Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant...

  • the scant detail provided is insufficient...
    >>is the ant-- a fire ant? (keep away from water)
    >>a flying ant? (netting is a must)
    >>carpenter ant? (get some teeny-tiny hammers/power tools...)
    >>army ant? (boots/ fatigues)
    >>argentine ant? (a tango partner?)

    see? hardly sufficient.

  • Ants? Ants! Ants?!?...

Are ya matching the subject matters' sizes to length of posted entry these days?

Great Expectations be damned-- at least you posted...

    (drastic measures rescinded)

  • madd props just for owning an ant!! My only advice is to keep them away from magnifying glasses, don't let the kids stick it up their nose (even though it does tickle), and show some love by offering it a sugar cube.

  • I hear they do well in your pants.

  • I have never had a pet ant, but one time, I did have 2 pet shrimp. I named them Jeeves and Cocktail (I know horrible, but everyone thought it was clever)....

  • i don't like ants much.  i had some really traumatic experiences with them when i was a kid.  and they had some with me too, later on.  hehe

  • This, I believe, is what you meant?

What a wonderful idea! If it doesn't work out, I hear after you dip 'em in melted chocolate (then cool, of course), they're great as a dessert.

  • D'oh, I had no idea you were back...

I'm thinking about getting a turtle myself.
